the tour of Belarus-based group “nagUal”

“nagUal” group visited the following Ukrainian cities: 19.09 — Kyiv, XLIB CLUB; 22.09 — Ivano-Frankivsk, Khimera art-cafe “Khimera”; 23.09 — Ternopil, Shynok club, 24.09 — Vinnytsia, Portal art-club.

“nagUal” style — psycho-folk. Year of formation — 2000. Since being formed, the group played over 600 concerts in Belarus, Russia, Poland, Lithuania, France, Romania and Moldova. In Ukraine the group was discovered at Sheshory’2006 festival and has dedicated followers ever since. Members of “nagUal”: Leonid Pavlyonok — voice, dance, folk drum, Thai flute, fir-nose, djembe, ocarina, straw pipe, Chadian harp, glyak, flute, Anaka Shaposhnikova — pantaleon, banbor, vocals, Yuriy Naumenko — contrabass, vocals, Benjamine Cope — clarinet, rura, vocals.

The inherent human need to fly is due to the desire to sing — and this is kind of songs sung by “nagUal”. To ease this task, the musicians even invented kind of own language, which does not need translation, however. “The language of “nagUal” consists of words of modern coinage which are clear to anyone”, says Lyonia Pavlyonok, vocals. “It’s just simpler, this way, to pass on my thoughts. Were our task to introduce the audience to folklore via the cultural or historic route, it would have been different. But the ultimate goal of our creative work is to persuade to join the active life-style. I can’t say that we’re digging the authentic music deep. We rather create the sound which is familiar and understandable to us — avant-garde folk — and we feel comfortable there”.
